It is early February, and it has been a long winter and has not stopped snowing since late November. It is a cold and cloudy day filled with bright white snow in the city of Mercia Elite. The bright snowflakes are falling through the grayish sky. The snowflakes are bright white like a winter firefly falling from the sky. A young woman named Polly Rockport. She is sweet, naïve martial artist expert, and a war orphan. Polly is heading home after a 2-hour trip to the grocery. She is walking and singing very cheerfully through the quiet streets.
Polly is surprised to see standing in the middle of nowhere, Dr. Riley Zinc, a paranoid musician known as “Zinc”. He’s not really a doctor after his loudmouth, vampire roommate named Flint, forged his college degree. Zinc looks very sad and not saying a single word.
He stares up at the deep gray snowy sky. A long bright tear is coming out of his bright blue eyes. Then, a tear drops off his chin directly into the ground. He is lonely and Valentine’s Day is near. He spent other holidays alone in the past.
Riley Zinc was a cheerful and bright college student from Treaka of the Mysteel Territory. As a young man, a mysterious businessman murdered his father, a beloved musician. While still looking at the sky, Zinc fainted, collapsed with a broken heart. His face is landed in the deep snow. Polly is stunned with fear; she has no choice but to save him. Polly ran fast to catch up with Zinc. Zinc is unconscious. Polly lifts him up to get his face out of the snow. Polly shouts, “Mr. Riley! Get up, Mr. Riley! Wake up!” Zinc is not responding. Polly lends her ear on Zinc’s chest to check his heartbeat. His heart is beating heavy and slow. She take off her mittens and feels Zinc’s cheek and head to check for the fever. His skin is very cold. Polly realizes that Zinc has been outside, probably all day and night.
Polly realizes she has no choice but to take him to the hospital. She picks him up like a limp doll, and heads to the hospital. The doctors realized that Zinc has severe hypothermia and probably has not eaten many days. Zinc has not woken up since he collapsed.
One week has passed and Zinc is recovering, but he is still weak and tired. He was released from the hospital and is staying with Polly. He sleeps a lot but it’s comfortable. Polly looks at Zinc with pity. Polly remembered the first day they meet. Zinc and Flint just moved into a new house near hers when they found a new job called Valet. Then, Polly runs off to start up a nice hot bath and delicious meal for Zinc. As zinc awake, he hears the water splashing from the tub. He opens his eyes gently and slowly. Polly stops the warm water and to puts a cherry blossom fragrance and pure sea salt in the bathwater. Zinc finally awakes. Polly turns her head to see that Zinc is all right. “Oh, Mr. Riley, you are up. How are you feeling?” Polly asks him cheerfully. “Well… I guess I’m a little bit better…” Then, Zinc gasps with shock, “What’s this?! Are you taking a bath? I’m sorry!” Zinc feels embarrassment at the thought of interrupting her bath. “No, Mr. Riley, I’m setting a nice warm bath just for you to help you recover from the hospital,” Polly cheerfully explains, but Zinc could not remember what had happened after his long sleep. “After you’re done with your bath, I am going to cook you an amazing dinner, just the two of us for Valentine’s Day.” Polly smiles at the insecure Zinc. “But, I…” “Come on, Mr. Riley. Did you know that Valentine’s Day is a holiday in which a person can be appreciated by someone?” Polly smiles again at Zinc and he seems speechless; but, impressed. Then, Zinc accepts the offer with a heavy sigh. “All right, I suppose you’re right…”
It was already in the late afternoon; Zinc was relaxed and peaceful as he soaked in the tub with the sweet smelling scent. Meanwhile, Polly is busy preparing a special dinner for him. She does not want Zinc to see it until after his bath.
After his bath, Zinc gets dressed. Polly came up the stairs to Zinc to accompany him to the meal. Polly asks him to close his eyes for a surprise. Zinc uses both of his hands to cover his eyes and follows her slowly downstairs to the kitchen. “Keep your eyes closed. No peeking!” Polly excitedly exclaimed. Zinc responds with a nod. Suddenly, they were in the kitchen. “Are you ready?” Zinc nods it. “Open Sesame,” says Polly with excitement. Zinc opens his eyes slowly, and then he gasps at the exquisite dinner. “It is a ‘Japanese Hot Pot Stew,’ with cabbages, carrots, shitake mushrooms, slices of beef shoulder, and green onions; steaming with pure broth.” As a child, Polly studied Asian cultures and martial arts from the far countryside of Kanni Meadows with her master/hero, The Vagabond. Vagabond was the world’s greatest robotic fighter in the far country.
The dinner was ready and Polly and Zinc sit together at the table, side-by-side. Zinc seems nervous from his lacked appetite. “Polly, I’m not sure if I can eat this…” “Don’t worry, Mr. Riley. I’m sure you must be very hungry after the hospital. Please eat some. You want some strength, don’t you?” Zinc could not say anything for a few seconds and his stomach growls. “All right…” Zinc is still nervous, as he picks up his chopsticks. He scoops up the mushroom, meat, and cabbage in the chopsticks together. He takes a bite. Suddenly, Zinc gasps silently with his eyes intensely wide. “Oh…God… It’s delicious, Polly! Incredible!”
Zinc feels happy with wonderful taste from Polly’s cooking. Polly smiles and giggles, “Why thank you, Mr. Riley. I’m really glad you like it. Hot Pot is one of the most popular Asian traditional meals.” “It’s really good… Thank you, Polly…It’s been a long time since I had a wonderful meal… really long time.” “Oh, Mr. Riley! I almost forgot to give you something…” Polly reaches in her purse and hands him a card. “Here you go, Mr. Riley… “Open it.” Polly sits smiling at Zinc while he opens a card, then he reads… “Will you be my Valentine, Riley? Love, Polly.” Zinc blushes with embarrass, but he smiles sadly. “Thank you, Polly… Nobody has ever asked me to be a Valentine before… Yes, I will.” Zinc accepts it. Next, Zinc is about to give to Polly something… a nice light blue gift box with bright pink ribbons around it. Zinc holds up a gift box on both palms and extends it to Polly. “Here, Polly. I bought this for you. Dr. Qubert and Flint helped me find something special…” “Oh, Mr. Riley, how thoughtful…” “Open it.” Zinc seemed a bit nervous about this gift. Polly begins to open the box, and then she gasps. “Oh, it’s beautiful!” It’s a heart shaped necklace with a bright pink diamond in the middle. “Zinc, it’s the most thoughtful gift I have ever gotten.” Suddenly, a letter falls from the box and lands on Polly’s foot. She picks up and opens the letter. She reads, “Be my Valentine, Polly? Zinc.” After she reads it, Polly looks passionately at Zinc with a smiles and blushes. Then, she comes closer to him and kisses Zinc’s cheek. Zinc freezes and is stunned. He gulped.
After Polly kisses Zinc, she looks up to Zinc and says, “Mr. Riley… Thank you. This is the best Valentine’s Day I ever have.” Polly smiles so lovingly at Zinc. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Riley Zinc,” said Polly. Finally, Zinc smiles very gladly, looks at Polly and says very calmly. “Me too… It’s been a long time that I have a wonderful holiday with someone like you… Happy Valentine’s Day, Polly Rockport.” Zinc looks very happy and continues eating the hot pot. Polly looks very happy, too; enjoying her new necklace and watching Zinc eat. Then, Polly begins to eat as well. “I’m sorry, Polly, to put you so much trouble for all I have been through…” Zinc confesses to Polly, “its ok, Mr. Riley…” she understands it. Both of them staring at each other and smiles; and finally, they begin to kiss on their lips gently together. Zinc holds Polly’s shoulders tightly. He can hear his heart pounding louder than ever. Polly’s hand lands on Zinc’s cheek and they kiss goodnight.
Later evening, Polly is sitting on the couch near the fireplace in her bright pink Asian PJs. She is reading one of the Japanese comic novels from last Christmas. Just then, she saw the door open slowly. It’s Zinc with his sweatshirt and pants; he comes in and wants to talk to Polly. “Hi Mr. Riley, can’t sleep?” Zinc feels anxious, but he answers. “Well, my room is a little chilly… I was wondering…could I snuggle with you?” Zinc is shy and the cuddle with a blanket in front of the fireplace. “You’re so warm, Polly…” “Thanks…” It is a romantic moment for Zinc and Polly to have for this holiday together. Zinc knows that Polly is the perfect woman that he has been looking for…
